Video is an increasingly common component for subjects and courses.
Whether teacher-created, licensed, or sourced from open repositories, video gives students flexibility in accessing resources and increases engagement and success.
Tips and strategies for teacher-created video
- Balance video content with other learning resources and align with the learning outcomes and assessments
- Ensure the video fits in well with the pedagogical design chosen (e.g. flipped classroom, 5E’s, case-based learning)
- Examine the effectiveness of various presentation formats (narrated slides, talking head-style, location-based footage or combinations) and aim for short, sharp videos that convey key messages or summarise difficult or confusing concepts
- Don’t aim for perfection – students appreciate enthusiasm and hearing authentic messages over a highly polished but robotic end product
- Allow time for editing. Overlaying video with captions or graphics, using transitions appropriately and shifting between still images and video can add depth and interest to a presentation.
Tips and strategies for licensed or open-source video
- Ensure video falls within fair use and copyright regulations
- Incorporate accessibility measures, such as, captioning or transcripts where possible
- Watch the selected video from start to finish to ensure it's appropriate
- Provide students with plenty of guidance and instruction for any activities associated with the video.
Panopto is the 番茄社区's video capture system that enables (mainly) teaching staff to create, edit and publish video to Learn番茄社区 subject sites.
If you require your students to capture video using Panopto, first make your request via the support form to ensure this will be a suitable method for your class size.
