Minimum English language proficiency requirements

Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 3c (or other) – Schedule II of the ·¬ÇÑÉçÇø Admissions Policy.

Students also need to take note that in accordance with the National Registration Board’s requirement, they must hold a valid IELTS (academic module) minimum score of 7.0 in all components within 2 years prior to applying for registration

Clinical placement/professional practice:

This course includes extensive professional or clinical placements. Students may be required to undertake clinical placements away from the campus at which they are enrolled, at their own expense. (Note: health professional courses generally involve extensive professional or clinical placements).

To successfully complete the Bachelor of Nursing Science –Bachelor of Midwifery degree students are required to recruit pregnant women who consent to the student attending and observing aspects of their care provision in a continuity of care model. Continuity of care experiences are additional to planned professional or clinical placements. Aspects of continuity of care experiences are likely to occur outside business hours.

Graduates must meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australian (NMBA) Registered Nurse standards for practice and the NMBA Midwifery competency standards to be eligible for registration with the NMBA.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the graduate will be able to:

  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate midwifery care within woman-centred and evidence-based frameworks
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships while advocating for women and their families within the context of public health
  • Plan and implement effective communication that supports the development and maintenance of collaborative professional practice with midwives, health care providers and other professionals
  • Base midwifery practice on ethical decision making in accordance with the endorsed code of ethics for midwives and in accordance with legislation common law.
  • Accept responsibility for their professional development and contribute to the development of others, including the provision of information and education that enables women to make informed decisions about their pregnancy while working in partnership.
  • Identify personal beliefs and develops these in midwifery practice that is culturally safe with particular emphasis on Aboriginal and Torres Strait women and their families.
  • Employ critical thinking and the best available evidence in making decisions that guide safe, quality nursing practice within person-centred and evidence-based frameworks.
  • Purposefully engage in effective therapeutic and professional relationships based on collegial generosity in a context of mutual trust and respect.
  • Demonstrate accountability for ensuring they are safe, capable practitioners, including ongoing self-management and responding to concerns about other health professionals’ capability for practice.

Eligibility

Students may apply for advanced standing for previous tertiary study in accordance with the Credit and Articulation policy and associated procedures.

Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 5 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 11 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the student has not completed the course of study prescribed for the degree.

Other restrictions

Up to 48 credit points may be granted only to applicants who hold current registration as a registered nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

All other applicants may receive up to 30 credit points.
