The following self-help guide is for clients that have OSX 10.9 and later installed on their laptop. It is written with the assumption that you are using the built-in AirPort card on your Mac.
Setup Instructions

- Go to and click to download the eduroam installer
- Select from the list, or search for
- Click installer to download app
- Open eduroam app on your device
- Enter email address and password when requested
Manual Setup Instructions

Select eduroam from the available list of networks.
Leave the Mode field set to Automatic.
In the User Name field enter your full email address.
In the Password field enter your password.
Tick the Remember this network box, then click Join.
If this is your first time connecting you may be prompted to verify a security certificate. The certificate name will be jcu-authentication.jcu.edu.au. Click Continue to accept the certificate. You will then be prompted to allow the change, enter your computer’s username and password and click Update Settings.
Note: This is NOT your username and password.
Troubleshooting
Sometimes you may encounter issues with connecting to the wireless network on campus. Following are the more common issues that are experienced and some suggested solutions.
If the Wi-Fi icon is not showing on your menu bar, click on the Apple Menu:
- Select System Preferences
- Select Network
- Make sure there is a tick in the box called Show Wi-Fi status in menu bar
- Click Apply and close the window
The Wi-Fi icon should now appear in the menu bar at the top right of your screen.
First make sure that you are in a wireless supported location. We have extensive wireless coverage on all our main campuses and remote teaching sites. Outdoor areas near the buildings will generally have decent coverage, while the further you move from a building, the weaker the coverage becomes.
Second, try searching for eduroam through the Join Other Network option:
- Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar
- Select the Join Other Network... option
- Click Show Networks
- Select eduroam from the available list of networks
- Leave the Mode field set to Automatic
- Enter your full email address and password,
- Tick Remember this Network, and then click Join
First of all - try to connect again. Wireless networks in general are less stable connections than fixed lines so are more susceptible to signal loss or timeout.
Check that you’re entering your full Email Address and Password correctly. Test that it works for other Online Services like Webmail, if not then email ithelpdesk@jcu.edu.au and request a password reset for your computer account which should resolve the problem.
Alternatively, the issue may be with the Wi-Fi password or wireless certificate stored on your computer. To remove those do the following:
- In Spotlight search for Keychain Access and launch it
- Select the All Items category
- Search for 802.1X Password, the name should be eduroam and delete it
- Then, search for jcu-authentication.jcu.edu.au it will be listed as a certificate, and delete it
Now click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar and toggle the Wi-Fi Off and then back On. Then try reconnecting following the Setup Instructions above.
If you've come from another institution that uses eduroam then you may have an existing profile saved to your computer that will need to be removed before you'll be able to connect to it here at . To do that perform the following steps:
- From the Apple Menu select System Preferences and click on Profiles
- Select eduroam in the User Profiles list
- Click the minus sign at the bottom to remove it
- Close the Profiles window
Now click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar and toggle the Wi-Fi Off and then back On. Then try reconnecting following the Setup Instructions above.
Don't be concerned. It doesn't mean anything bad is about to happen to your computer or your personal details. Click Continue to proceed with connection. There is a system out on the internet which allows companies to pay for "signed" certificates, essentially verifying that they are indeed the company / service they claim to be.
Further Assistance
If you require further assistance with configuring your device to connect to the wireless network then support is available for Staff and Students on both the Townsville and Cairns campuses, more information can be found here.
