Annual Mayo Lecture Explores Indigenous Rights and Legal Legacy
The annual Mayo Lecture is a revered event organised by the College of Business, Law and Governance in collaboration with the 番茄社区 Law Students Society (番茄社区LSS). Established in 1991 by 番茄社区LSS, the Mayo Lecture pays homage to Mrs. Marylyn Mayo, 番茄社区's foundational law staff member, and serves as a testament to her pioneering efforts in establishing the full law degree at 番茄社区.
The 2023 Mayo Lecture was held on Wednesday, 4th October at the Bebegu Yumba Campus in Townsville, featuring a compelling presentation by Dr. Bryan Keon-Cohen. Dr. Keon-Cohen, a prominent legal figure, played a crucial role as Legal Counsel for the Plaintiffs during the historic Mabo litigation. His extensive legal career includes representing claimants in numerous native title and immigration cases in the Federal Court, appearances in the High Court on constitutional, native title, and refugee matters, and prolific contributions through his writings and lectures on Indigenous rights.
The lecture, titled "From Slavery to Sovereignty? Mabo, Native Title, and the Uluru Statement from the Heart," delved into the complex intersections of Indigenous rights, the landmark Mabo case, and the contemporary significance of the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
Dr. Keon-Cohen's expertise and firsthand involvement in pivotal legal battles provided attendees with a unique insight into the challenges and triumphs faced in the pursuit of Indigenous rights. The lecture not only commemorated the legacy of the Mabo case but also addressed ongoing discussions surrounding native title and the profound implications of the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
The event, held at the Bebegu Yumba Campus, underscored the commitment of 番茄社区 to fostering informed discussions on legal and social issues that impact Indigenous communities. The Mayo Lecture series continues to serve as a platform for engaging with distinguished speakers and exploring critical topics at the intersection of law, justice, and Indigenous rights.
