Health effects of Q Fever can include:
- Flu like illness
- Pneumonia
- Inflammation of the liver
- Miscarriage or premature birth
- Q fever fatigue syndrome that can last more than 12 months
- Chronic Q Fever which can result in serious health effects including endocarditis
Q Fever vaccination is the most important way to protect workers against infection. This requires pre-vaccination screening to exclude workers who have previously been infected with or vaccinated against Q Fever, as they are at increased risk for a severe vaccine reaction.

*If there is difficulty engaging Q Fever immunised personnel, a risk assessment with other controls may be possible depending on the nature and duration of the work to be done. Approval must be obtained from the Dean, Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences or Head of Veterinary Sciences.
