Diversity and inclusion

Providing opportunities for northern Queenslanders to attend university is at the heart of 番茄社区’s commitment to the wellbeing of local communities.

Many of 番茄社区’s programs are focused on reducing the cultural, economic and academic limitations on the next generation of students.

番茄社区 Winter School for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students

Dates: 26 June to 1 July 2022

Discover university life and gain skills for success. Want to know what it's like to be a uni student? Then our residential preparatory program for high school students may be the program for you.

The 番茄社区 Winter School for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students offers students in Year 10, 11 and 12 the chance to experience university life during the school holidays.

Over five days, students live on campus and take part in academic lectures and team-building activities in an interactive program that provides opportunities to meet University staff and students and form bonds with other students in the program.

On-campus accommodation allows for a complete university experience. Accommodation is in the residential colleges on campus and catering is provided for all participants while students are on campus. 番茄社区 covers the cost of return travel, including flights, bus or train, for students outside of the Townsville region, within Australia.

Dates: 23 to 27 May | 6 to 10 June | 29 August to 23 September 2022

Thinking about Uni?

If you haven’t studied for a while and want to see if university might be for you, come along to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pathway program to give it a try.

You will attend classes on campus and take part in learning activities designed to help prepare you for the demands of university study.

The program is one week long and will be taught by the Indigenous Education and Research Centre staff, and is designed to help build your capacities in Math, English and Chemistry. These subject areas will be important to you if you are interested in, for example, studies in nursing, social work, psychology, education, business, IT, medicine, science & engineering.

During the program you will also learn about the support services available to help you succeed in your studies, meet other students who will be an important network for you, and become aware of the range of scholarships that are available to support your studies.
