About this event

Social work is a profession with formal commitments to social justice and human rights explicitly articulated in international and national codes of ethics. The statutory roles of many social workers operate under the legislative frameworks promulgated by national governments. And yet, diverse political contexts influence the operational space of social workers. For example, the legislative conditions restricting government contracting of social services to organisations that engage in advocacy and service delivery. Eligibility for social programs is often politicised, with common exclusions for the persistently hot-button target group of immigrants.
This lecture will explore diverse meanings of what constitutes social justice within social work across diverse global contexts. Drawing on examples of research and practice over the past 25 years, it will trace the intersection of different philosophies of knowledge underpinning social justice ideals with varied cultural and political contexts.

Professor Jordan will seek to raise questions about what it means to ‘thread the needle of social justice and professional ethics’ and explore how interdisciplinary knowledge informs socially and ethically just work practice.
