Plant species are already responding to climate change by undergoing rapid evolution, altering their phenology, and undergoing remarkably rapid shifts in distribution. I will present data showing that different species are changing in different ways and at different rates, and that not all of the responses are as we would expect.
Most strikingly, a third of species seem to be shifting their distributions downhill or toward the equator rather than shifting to cooler areas. This variation in species' responses to climate change means that broad change in plant communities seems inevitable. I will finish by discussing implications of all this change for conservation.
