Post-admission requirements

Current Apply First Aid and CPR Certificate:

Students must hold a current Provide First Aid Certificate before undertaking professional or clinical placements. Students are responsible for any costs associated with obtaining this certificate.

Hepatitis B immunisation:

Students must provide evidence of being immune to hepatitis B within the first teaching period of their studies. A blood-borne viral disease may result in a student’s inability to obtain a placement in a Queensland Health facility and consequently may result in their inability to complete the requirements of the course as accredited by the relevant professional accrediting body. If a student has not complied with the above requirement by the last day of the first teaching period of their studies, their enrolment will be terminated immediately.

Course learning outcomes

The new Medical Laboratory Science graduate will be able to:

  • Demonstrate integrated theoretical and technical knowledge and skills, with depth in the underlying concepts and principles across the range of pathology science disciplines

  • Critically review, analyse, synthesise and apply scientific evidence and process to a range of social and economic contexts

  • Apply recognized methods and tools of medical laboratory science to the process of enquiry and discovery, particular in a clinical/medical investigative context

  • Communicate scientific information and philosophies clearly and coherently through well-developed English language and numeracy proficiency, to a range of audiences for a range of purposes using a variety of modes

  • Demonstrate personal and social responsibility and accountability through an awareness of ethical frameworks, by working safely and responsibly in individual and team environments

  • Critically reflect upon the role of pathology investigation and medical research in tropical, rural and remote and indigenous communities

  • Reflect on current skills, knowledge and attitudes, in order to plan and implement ongoing personal and professional development needs, relevant to the pathology and working as a professional medical laboratory scientist.

Eligibility

Students may apply for advanced standing for previous tertiary study in accordance with the Advanced Standing and Articulation policy and associated procedures.

Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 10 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 21 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the candidate has not completed the course of study prescribed for the degree.
