Please be advised that the Australian government has announced a number of changes to the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) from 01 January 2020. These include a new lower minimum repayment threshold, an increase to the FEE-HELP loan limit, a combined, renewable loan limit, and removal of a loan
fee for some students. Please refer to for further information regarding these changes.
From 1 January 2020 the Australian Government introduced a combined HELP loan limit which caps the amount you can borrow. This loan limit includes any HECS-HELP debt incurred from 2020 onwards plus any existing and new FEE-HELP, VET FEE-HELP or VET Student Loans.
Eligibility
Find out if you are eligible to defer payment of your subject and Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSA Fee) through the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) scheme.
You can defer payment of your subject and SSA Fee if you meet the residency requirements:
- An Australian citizen undertaking, in Australia, at least one unit of study contributing to your course of study, or
- A permanent humanitarian visa holder, residing in Australia for the duration of your studies, or
- Certain New Zealand citizens, residing in Australia for the duration of your studies.
See the residency requirements for all HELP loans on the website.
The Australian Government is proposing changes to Higher Education from 1 January 2018 and to the test for Australian Citizenship (for applications made after 20 April 2017). To find out how these changes may affect you if the legislation is passed, refer to the and the websites.
You are not eligible to defer payment if you are:
- A permanent resident or New Zealand citizen who doesn't meet certain criteria.
- An international student.
- A domestic undergraduate student, studying single subjects and not admitted to a full course.
- An Australian citizen or permanent humanitarian visa holder, or New Zealand citizen (meeting certain criteria) who does not meet the residency requirements. See the residency requirements for all HELP loans on the website.
