Pittosporum, from Greek pitta pitch and sporos/spora seed, referring to the sticky resinous coating found on the seed. Trees, shrubs and climbers, may have coloured sap and maybe resinous; leaves alternate or pseudo-whorled. Flowers 5-merous usually fragrant, distinct calyx and corolla. Carpels usually 2, ovary usually unilocular; fruit a capsule or berry, seeds often sticky from a resinous mucilage.
