Research Capacity
Academic research members have a strong foundation in the following research areas, among others:
- Natural hazards and extreme events
- Integrated disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation
- Nursing education and disaster management
- Land use planning for disaster risk reduction
- Building resilience in the built, natural, economic, and social environments
- Tourism crisis and disaster management
- Impacts of disasters on individuals, families, and communities
- Vulnerability and capacity assessment

Academic members of the Centre also conduct specialised and relevant research in the fields of engineering, environmental sciences, healthcare sciences, geography, sociology, education, business, law, urban design, marine systems, psychology, and medicine, among others.
We apply our expertise to a range of hazards—floods, droughts, cyclones, severe wind events, tsunamis, storm surge, sea level rise, bushfires, heat waves, environmental pollutants, and disease outbreaks, among others—and their interconnections.
The Centre also brings extensive experience in the translation of research and science into effective policy recommendations, industry standards, and community actions, both national and international.
